Bicentenary of the Peninsular War 1808-1814 The Peninsular War from 1808-1814 formed a key theatre in the Napoleonic Wars. The British and Portuguese armies under Sir Arthur Wellesley (later first Duke of Wellington) defended Portugal, helped to liberate Spain from French rule under Joseph Bonaparte, and ultimately invaded southern France. For both the Portuguese and the Spanish this was a War of Independence.
