HOLLAND HOUSE, Kensington, London. An interior view of the bombed library at Holland House with readers apparently choosing books regardless of the damage. Photographed in 1940. The House was heavily bombed during World War II and remained derelict until 1952 when parts of the remains were preserved.

City of London. A figure stands amid destroyed and burnt-out buildings. The Brewer's Hall in Aldermanbury was built in 1673 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. This hall was then destroyed during the Blitz. A new hall was built in 1960 and stands on the same site. Photographed by Bedford Lemere in 1941.

DEPTFORD CREEK, LONDON. The paddle steamer Plinlimmon (formerly Cambrai) was hired by the Ministry of War transport in 1939. She is shown here in war-time livery (J66) with a full complement of anti-aircraft guns. The General Steam Navigation Co was a steamship company founded in 1820. This shipyard was established in 1825 to build and maintain the company's paddle steamers. Deptford Power Station can be seen beyond. Photographed in 1940 by Larkin Bros.
